LTO5 Ultrium LTO 5 Tape 1.6TB
Posted on September 25th, 2009 No commentsImation will soon be making the industry’s first 1.6TB raw capacity tape, in the LTO-5 format in early 2010.
Nice, but…..
Linear Tape-Open (or LTO) is a magnetic tape data storage technology, this means it is much like a music tape but big. =)
The standard form-factor of LTO technology is called Ultrium, the original LTO can hold 100 GB of data in a single cartridge. LTO4 Ultrium can hold 800 GB in the same size cartridge, but that is compressed; i always use not compressed for 400GB. The reason for this, (not compressing the data) is not for the security of the data but for indexing times.
My fear is the time that it will require a drive to read the index from a 1.6 T LTO-5 Ultrium tape; lets say you have a problem with your backup and had to re-index your tape to make a backup then what? go to the movies?
Fell free to make your comments.
